GP Registrars

What is a GP Registrar?

A GP Registrar is a qualified doctor who has chosen to undertake speciality training in general practice. It takes a minimum of 5 years to qualify as a GP and involves working both in hospital and in general practice posts. Whilst in general practice registrars are supervised by an experienced GP trainer.

What does this mean for my consultation?

Usually nothing. GP registrars undertake a “debrief” after their clinic where they discuss all cases with an experienced GP. Occasionally a registrar may contact you after the surgery when they have discussed your case further. Please ensure your contact details with the surgery are up to date.

Sometimes GP Registrars will video their consultations or have another GP sitting with them for training purposes. You will be notified prior to your consultation if this is the case.

ANP

Advanced Nurse Practitioners are specialised nurses who have a lot of experience working in primary care (with GPs) and who have undergone higher professional training to become practitioners. In practical terms this means they have had extensive university-led training in a range of subjects including physical examination, managing illnesses and injuries and pharmacology and prescribing. All our nurse practitioners are nurse prescribers and are very comfortable managing a wide range of acute (i.e. recent onset) problems. They are independent and used to investigating, diagnosing and treating a wide range of common General Practice illnesses and injuries.
